Do You Live to Work or Work to Live?

I was at lunch with a much older friend of mine the other day and he said that I should always “live to work.”  I think I do.  I love my job.  Honestly.  I plan people’s vacations!  I hear the excitement in their voices as we confirm their cruise.  I hear children in the background shout, “Yeah!”  I hear husbands and wives on the phone excited as they plan their anniversary.  It’s a job that I honestly love.  Not only that, I work with people that I consider really good friends.  In fact, some friends that work here are my best friends.   I do work some overtime, but it’s not dreadful.

At the end of one of one of my calls, recently, a client said “Thanks for loving your job–it shows!” I truly believe this work makes a positive difference in peoples’ lives. I love that it teaches me about completion, so that I don’t over-create or over-commit. And, I also have my job crafted in a way that is in balance for me. I don’t work more days than I want in a given month (I’m fortunate to have a choice.) So in a way, I live to do this work because I love it AND I also work just enough to live the kind of life that I want. I regulate my paycheck and I love it!

I know some people who are over-worked.  Never have breaks, hardly ever give themselves the weekend off….I think it’s exhausting.  Some people need time to just “live.”
